Magnus, the structure is the thing here, and I don't think it's accidental.

James in the showers is a boy being read by a man who can feel his pulse and knows it. Four hours later he's on the door of the Pit and he wasn't the nervous student here. He was the gatekeeper.

Two selves, two registers, a hard wall between them — and then a phone buzzes and the wall comes down. The video doesn't out him as gay. It outs him as the same man in both places.

And the smartest choice in the whole piece: what's on the recording isn't an act. The video ended with a shot of James's face — exposed, vulnerable, and undeniably wanting. The incriminating thing is a face. He can't argue with a face.

Davidson's exit line is excellent. Stop pretending you're a victim. It doesn't suit a man of your build. He refuses James the one comfort he was reaching for.

But Marcus is what makes this chapter good rather than just hot.

Experience told Marcus not to push his luck; he realised all too well that this young man was going through it. They don't make it to the mattresses. They stand against a wall in the dark and hold each other, and James buries his face in silver fur and breathes. You set up a hookup and delivered comfort instead, and Marcus reading the room and stopping is far more attractive than anything else he could have done.

You look at them like you're starving, and you're terrified someone's going to notice you've got a fork in your hand. That's the line I'll remember.

And then the wastebasket. Unglamorous, involuntary, exactly right. He felt grubby. Sticky. Not from the club's musk, but from the residue of a secret that was no longer his.

Currency is only valuable if someone is willing to pay.

Terrified, exposed, and completely awake. Thursday's coming.
